International Women’s Day and why I #choosetochallenge
Equality is a major part of GrumpyKid’s values. It’s the golden thread that runs through everything, we don’t just have products that help children understand it, we do everything to ensure that GrumpyKid is a store that feels gender neutral. We aren’t here to tell you what you should and shouldn’t buy for your children…every child is unique!
We celebrate International Women’s day because there is still so much to be done to balance the scales of equality, and therefore the sooner we can teach our children about it and what equality means, the more support for the cause, because you probably know, change like this takes decades. I’m not just talking about teaching girls either, we also need to get the boys involved and help them gain an understanding of what they can do to be a force for change. Strength in numbers.
The theme for International Women’s Day 2021 (IWD) this year is Choose to Challenge which encourages us all to take action for equality and join the mission to forge a gender equal world.
Whilst IWD continues to celebrate the achievements of women, this year it is asking a little bit more. It is asking us to be brave, step forward and speak out when we see, hear or experience inequality. Remember the quote by Desmond Tutu? ‘If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor’. In this case, that would be the patriarchy.
Since becoming a mother I have spent a lot of time considering how the world my children are now growing up in is vastly different to the one I grew up in.
I have two sons. I have also always felt that I have a big responsibility to teach and encourage them both to consider ALL others as equals. When a child is born, they don’t know gender bias, inequality or racism. But our children are always listening, and over time certain things start to stick! By the way, those whose kids may have innocently thrown out the odd swear word will understand what I mean it can happen so easily! I don’t write this and judge!
In order to #choosetochallenge it may be that we have to educate ourselves in the process, more on that at a later date. But in the first instance you can check out the IWD website. There is so much that we can do to help our children be the change the world needs.
This is why #choosetochallenge is so important. It is a catalyst for change, it is encouraging us to now go beyond our comfort zone and call out anything that isn’t supportive of gender equality.
There are so many amazing resources now to help us help our children see the world through equal eyes. Yes, we need to be conscious of some of the things we say (I know this can be tricky when the children are around other influences!), but I am certain if you are reading this blog then you a probably already aware of things that you feel are important to teach your child.
We have the power to help them be the change.
The easiest place to start is by surrounding our children with positive role models. Both in real life but also in their surroundings. Surrounding them with positive images and prompts that will ultimately lead to questions. The earlier we have those conversations the better.
At GrumpyKid we have books full of positive and empowering stories of people who chose to challenge…Emmeline Pankhurst, David Bowie to name a few! We also sell lots of other things that support gender equality and more specifically…girl power!
